everything we know about the highly anticipated future electric SUV

The 100% electric Peugeot e-3008 SUV is eagerly awaited. It must be said that this is one of the most emblematic Peugeot cars. The formalization of this future electric car is scheduled for 2023 and we already have an idea of what lies ahead. We take stock.

We know Peugeot from its Peugeot 208, the best-selling car in France in 2022. We are talking about 88,812 units sold, all engines combined, including 19,219 Peugeot e-208. This makes it the best-selling electric car in France in 2022 (source: NGC-Data), just ahead of the Dacia Spring, which takes second place. Tesla’s Model 3 sedan is in third place, just followed by the Renault Mégane E-Tech.

On the SUV side, the Peugeot 2008 II leads the way, with 51,454 registrations in 2022, including 7,174 all-electric e-2008 models. The latter model is less popular, as it is based on the modular CMP platform (identical to the thermal versions). So we see rather limited performance, especially in terms of autonomy, but also the charging power.

Peugeot has plans to electrify one of its most popular models in 2023. It is the 3008, the seventh best-selling model in France in 2022 with more than 35,000 units sold. The Peugeot 3008 has been at the top of C-segment SUV sales in France since its introduction in 2016. It is logical that this model will be fully electric. What does Peugeot have in store for this new electric model?

What can you expect from the Peugeot e-3008?

The future Peugeot 3008 will be based on the eVMP platform (Electric Vehicle Modular Platform), derived from the EMP2 platform, which offers the possibility of having several engines.

Peugeot has already lifted the veil on the future Peugeot 3008 and 5008 in light hybridization with a three-cylinder 1.2 PureTech (EB2 Gen3) Hybrid 48 V engine and a brand new gearbox called e-DCS6, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The energy stored in the 48 V battery, located under the driver’s seat, has a capacity of 0.90 kWh or 0.43 useful kWh. All this to send energy to the electric motor, which produces up to 28 hp and 55 Nm of torque, which is located on the front axle. As for the autonomy in 100% electric, it would be ridiculous, namely less than a km, the main reason for this hybridization is to reduce overall consumption. These new 3008 and 5008, named Hybrid 136 e-DCS6, will be made official in June 2023.

But the version that interests us is the all-electric version. The Peugeot e-3008 will be the first Peugeot car based on the platform. STLA dedicated to electric vehicles, and more specifically the STLA Medium. The information was formalized by Linda Jackson, the general manager of the French manufacturer Peugeot.

Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, previously indicated that in 2021 several vehicles will benefit from this new STLA platform:

  • STLA Small for compact vehicles with a length of 3.5 to 4.3 meters, with batteries from 37 to 82 kWh for a maximum range of 500 km. It’s an expected platform for 2026 that the future Jeep Renegade will certainly benefit from;
  • STLA Medium for cars from 4.35 to 5 metres, with battery capacities from 87 to 104 kWh and a range of up to 700 km;
  • STLA wide for vehicles from 4.65 to 5.4 metres, for battery capacities from 101 to 118 kWh with a range of up to 800 km;
  • STLA frame for larger vehicles, from 5.4 to 5.9 meters and battery capacities from 159 to over 200 kWh, with a range of up to 800 km.

The Peugeot e-3008 could thus be equipped ACC (Total-Saft/PSA) batteries with a capacity of up to 104 kWhthat would achieve autonomy up to 700 km of autonomy. We remain cautious, we imagine that it will be the displayed autonomy of a high-end version.

It remains to be determined whether the consumption announced by Peugeot will be the actual measured consumption according to the WLTP homologation cycle. It should be noted that Stellantis tends to announce ambitious consumption figures by dividing the battery capacity by the autonomy, which can give a very low consumption that does not take into account all factors, such as the energy loss during charging. Consumption measured according to the WLTP cycle gives a more accurate picture of the actual consumption.

Here it will certainly be a matter of maximum WLTP autonomy between 500 and 600 km. In terms of charging power, the electric Peugeot 3008 would offer fast DC charging up to 200 kW.

Little information is available about the electric motor used, the Peugeot e-3008 would get a new electric motor, developed by E-Motors (Nidec/PSA) and called M3. It is the new 156 hp engine that equips the new version of the Peugeot e-208. The Peugeot e-3008 would therefore be available with one or two engines, we are talking about 200 hp and up to 350 hp in all-wheel drive.

Peugeot intends to adopt a distinctive design for its zero-emission models, characterized by a touch of futurism, which should also be reflected in the interior. This approach is intended to compete directly with the Renault Mégane E-Tech, Skoda Enyaq iV and Volkswagen ID.4. We imagine Peugeot will make notable changes to the design due to the emphasis on aerodynamics.
